Web3 Wallet MetaMask Denies Rumors about Alleged Airdrop

On March 28th, MetaMask took to Twitter to address the rumors linked to an alleged snapshot or airdrop of MetaMask native token, scheduled for March 31st.

In their tweet, MetaMask warned users that "these rumors are not only false, but they are dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers."

At the end of its announcement, MetaMask urged customers to "be on the lookout for fake sites." It is worth noting that on Twitter, there are several accounts that are imitating MetaMask and promoting the alleged Mask token airdrop.

It is believed that these rumors could be associated with a "fireside chat" held at ETHDenver 2023 on March 14th. During the session, MetaMask parent company ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin claimed that the firm is "actively working to decentralize" MetaMask. Later on, the man allegedly confirmed plans to launch a MetaMask-related token.

Lubin first alluded to a MetaMask token over a year ago in a tweet dated November 8th, 2021, saying, "Wen $MASK? Stay tuned."

As the situation unfolds, crypto enthusiasts and beginners should remain cautious and attentive to any further updates regarding MetaMask and its potential token offerings.

This is not the first time MetaMask is targeted by malicious actors. In February, MetaMask warned investors about an email phishing attack. At that time, attackers allegedly used the web hosting firm Namecheap's third-party upstream system to contact MetaMask clients.
